 Perhaps you’re one of many Americans who has never heard of Belarus. But you’ve probably heard of Chernobyl, the nuclear plant that exploded in Ukraine in 1986. It was Belarus, just to the north, that got clobbered with most of the radiation—resulting in a terrible outbreak of cancer and other medical problems, especially among the children.
Belarus was part of the old USSR and still operates largely under the same conditions as the Soviet system. Religious activities are strictly controlled by the government, and it’s even illegal to pray in a private residence.
The needs are great, and most state-run institutions—such as orphanages and shelters, hospitals and clinics, prisons and detention centers—seem frozen in time from the Cold War. Workers serve in old buildings with decrepit facilities and extremely inadequate budgets. The smells alone are often enough to drive visitors away.
In yet another throwback to the Soviet era, humanitarian aid from the USA is largely rejected by the government. But in the midst of this complex, “invisible” mission field, your loving partnership is making a powerful impact for God’s Kingdom.
