But as exciting as it is to consider this huge number of people, sometimes it’s even more touching to be face to face with just one person impacted by this ministry we share together.
This is how I felt when I met eight-year-old Sarah in Kenya—just one of the more than 28,000 children you’re impacting through our worldwide humanitarian outreaches.

Sarah has grown up amid the unspeakable filth and squalor of Nairobi’s Mathare Valley—a three-square-mile area that’s home to 600,000 people who have no running water, electricity, or police protection. Some of the children in Mathare spend their time sitting idly on the side of the road. Others smoke glue with their friends or simply sleep the days away.
So how could little Sarah find joy in such surroundings?
I first met Sarah as she held hands with another little girl while they awaited their meal at the Mathare Valley Child Development Center, one of our ministry outreaches. As I handed Sarah her plate, she reached out her other hand to make sure her friend also received a plate of the piping-hot, great-smelling food.
Sarah’s grin was wide and beaming as they found a place to sit against the 20-foot-high border wall that provided safety for the compound. She was intent on taking good care of her friend.
Later, Sister Jane, the head of the Development Center, took me on a walk through the narrow alleyways outside. Streams of raw sewage were everywhere, and the alleys were littered with trash. Amid this overwhelming poverty, women held their babies and did their laundry.
As we turned a corner, Jane said she wanted me to meet one of her star pupils. “There you are!” she said, affectionately hugging a little girl. It was Sarah!

Even in this hellish area, Sarah was continually sharing a piece of Heaven with those around her. She was Christ’s hands extended—just like you!
