Time to Seek the Lord
3/4/2010
"Glory in His holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad...seek His face continually. Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done, His marvels and the judgments from His mouth...He is the Lord our God."  - 1 Chronicles 16:10-14 NASB
Campmeetings uniquely changed America. Historian Everett Dick has described how, in the nineteenth century, people living in the western frontier would gather in places like "the banks of a wooded stream where there was ample shade, water, and pasture." Trees were cleared and seats were built. Each community was responsible for providing a tent for meeting.
News about these campmeetings spread, and families gathered from throughout the region. Many slept in tents, but others lived in covered wagons which might be "pitched in a circle around the place of meeting." Typically, three meetings were held each day-in the morning, afternoon, and night, when "the encampment was lighted up with lanterns, lamps, and campfires."
These campmeetings were deemed so important that whole communities often abandoned all but the most necessary work so people could attend. During these special times, "the cares of life were laid aside for a few days." Meetings often continued for two weeks or longer as the Holy Spirit moved powerfully, and people didn't want to leave God's Presence.
This kind of experience still is needed today-the kind of commitment David describes when he calls the Israelites to "seek the Lord continually," "remember His wonderful deeds," and "glory in His holy name." We all need times to draw apart from the world and seek the Lord.
Make God a priority in your life, and commit yourself wholeheartedly to Him. Pray. Worship. Read His Word. Listen to His voice. Remember all that He's done for you. Don't let the trivial things of this world keep you from the riches of time spent with Him.
Prayer
Father, help me to set aside the worries of the world. I seek Your face and look to You for guidance and direction. I worship and praise You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
