The First Campmeeting
3/3/2010
"Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain."  - Exodus 19:17 NASB
Great revivals swept through the United States. It was 1800, and the country had been independent for just a few years. In these revivals, America was transformed as people gathered into tents for times of worship, celebration, prayer, and preaching. This was the birth of modern "campmeetings."
But the idea of gathering in tents had its roots in Israel's exodus from Egypt. The Bible describes how the Israelites lived in a camp near the slopes of Mount Sinai. In this place, God dramatically revealed Himself. Here the people were reminded of their sins and called to repentance. God's Word was proclaimed, and people were called to live according to His standards. They were called to separate themselves from the world and live holy lives unto the Lord. These same themes resonated throughout the campmeetings in nineteenth-century America. And now, all of us need to remember these same issues every day throughout our lives.
God wants you to realize that you need a "campmeeting" in your life. These are times when you draw apart from the world to experience His majesty and power...times when you can grow in your knowledge of His Word, sense His conviction for sin in your life, and seek His forgiveness.
Remember: God has a calendar-a timetable for occasions He calls His feasts, His special days.
Obey the Lord by worshipping Him during His appointed times. Look for opportunities to have a "campmeeting" with God. Draw apart from the world to worship Him, seek Him, and know Him more intimately.
Prayer
Father, I seek to know You better. Teach me more of Your Truth. Search my heart and cleanse me of sin. Help me to live according to Your Word. Revive me! In Jesus' name. Amen.
