"'Behold, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar'...When the sons of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the sons of Israel gathered themselves at Shiloh to go up against them in war." - Joshua 22:11-12 NASB

After 40 years in the wilderness, the Israelites finally approached the Promised Land. But two and a half of the tribes asked to stay on the east side of the Jordan. Moses agreed, provided that they help the other tribes possess the land. After these tribes kept their promise, Joshua allowed them to return to the land they wanted. Everything seemed fine--until it became known that the tribes had built an altar east of the Jordan. The other tribes were so concerned that they decided to go to war, accusing the other tribes of committing an "unfaithful act" (v. 16). However, tragedy was avoided when these tribes explained that they weren't being unfaithful: The altar simply was a witness to remind future generations of the true God. How easy it can be for us to act like the accusing tribes, rushing to judgment and assuming the worst, criticizing without knowing the facts. To prevent these kinds of disputes, Jesus said we are to make every effort to solve disputes in private: "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother" (Matthew 18:15-18). We should involve others or address issues publicly only after private options have been exhausted. Today, make sure that you learn from this conflict between the Israelites. Before you rush to judgment, be sure to check the facts. If you have questions, don't assume the worst, but make sure you know the truth. Follow Jesus' teaching regarding disputes. And remember, those who are merciful will obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7).
