"Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus they forsook the LORD."
- Judges 10:6 NASB

The Israelites became attracted to the beliefs and customs of the people around them. Instead of just following one false god, the Bible lists seven different gods, or groups of gods, that the Israelites sometimes followed. They seemed intrigued by everything the surrounding peoples did, and they couldn't keep from exploring every god that was worshiped. Even before Israel entered the Promised Land, God warned them that the people in the land worshiped other gods that could lead them into trouble. He knew how easily they could be seduced into worshiping these false gods and adopting wrong beliefs and customs. Sadly, Israel failed to heed this warning. As a result, they fell into traps that led them astray. As a result, they did not experience the full blessings of God. What a warning to us! We, too, face many kinds of "gods" in our society: false religions, worldly philosophies, pleasures and distractions, the worship of clever thoughts and articulate leaders, and attractive lifestyles that will ultimately corrupt us. Even today, we can be trapped and ensnared by false gods. So how can we guard ourselves from falling into this deception? We must renew our dedication to the one true God and make Jesus the Lord of our lives. As He said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (John 14:6). No matter how appealing the gods of the world may seem, there is no other way to Heaven but Jesus. Today, fill your mind with God's Word. Be on guard against the temptations and deceptions of the world. Don't allow false gods to sway your heart from the Lord.

Father, give me discernment. Help me recognize deception and avoid the traps of the world. I declare that Jesus is my Lord. I will have no other gods before You! In His name. Amen.
